Disaster Mitigation Projects
From 2022-23, the Department of Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation has undertaken comprehensive works under the umbrella of disaster mitigation, including implementation of the Landslide Management Plan.
Maharashtra’s Landslide Management Plan
Landslides are a frequently occurring hazard in the Sahyadri, Konkan, and Deccan plateau regions of Maharashtra. On 19 July 2023, a catastrophic landslide in Irshalwadi village in Raigad district of Maharashtra claimed several lives.
In its aftermath, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) carried out a Landslide Susceptibility and Risk Assessment study with a village-wise landslide risk analysis for planning mitigation strategies. It has identified 483 high-priority vulnerable villages for undertaking landslide mitigation works scattered across 11 districts of Ratnagiri, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Raigad, Thane, Sindhudurg, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Palghar, and Sangli.
